I'd like to think my ability to spot a food truck from the distance could be something worthy enough to put on my resumé. On my way out of Newton yesterday I spotted what looked to be a food truck and one I had yet to visit. So I flipped my car around pulled into the lot and stopped by Tortas Mary.
This authentic Mexican food truck advertises 5 main options – Tortas, tacos, quesadillas, burritos, and nachos. I went with the Torta being that it was in the name and chose al pastor (marinated pork) as my meat of choice. It also came with tomatoes, refried beans, lettuce, and avocado all on slightly toasted bread.
My first take away was that this passes the eye test. Fresh veggies all around and an excellent portion to match the price tag of $10. In the container was also salsa to pair with it. It was thin in consistency and pretty spicy. It really had quite the bite to it which I liked.
Now as for the meat, I wasn’t particularly impressed. I could get subtle hints of that marinated flavor but for the most part it tasted bland. It was also a more ground Al pastor whereas I tend to lean toward the thicker cut meat more. The sauce however spiced up the torta and I had no problem pouring it all over each bite.
It’s clear from this visit, Tortas Mary takes pride in fresh bread and veggies. The Al pastor just wasn’t a real winner for me. I did eat the whole thing, just wasn’t blown away by flavor. I would be interested in trying the asada next time.
