When it comes to some Vampiros, no place has my heart quite like La Chona. Starting with their first location off Harry across from St. Joe hospital known as Taqueria La Chona. Finding out they now have a new restaurant on the south side, just west of Pawnee and Seneca known as Fonda La Chona made it a no-brainer to go as soon as I could to check it out.
Walking into the building opened up to a much more spacious area than their other location and even had newly designed chairs for comfort and style as well as big tables, perfect for the whole family to have room. In the back sat a bar with a variety of beers and mixed drinks and an area displaying their various aguas. On my visit today I ordered jamaica (hibiscus flavored) and melon aguas both equally refreshing.
For the appetizer, I went with the Queso Fundido which I think speaks for itself with the picture above. A cast iron skillet filled with cheesy goodness served with tortillas. Though I wasn’t too shy to reach for some chips to scoop the cheese as well.
Speaking of chips, you’ll get complimentary chips and salsa, which is your typical tomato-based salsa. In addition, I recommend asking for their other three which are a salsa verde, chipotle, and an avocado-based salsa. They all have great flavor that differ from each other, good add-ons for the chips or whatever you order.
My main course always includes Vampiros no matter what. They’re just too good to go without. They are packed with melted cheese, meat, avocado, and pico de gallo on top of a toasted tortilla. I went with asada and Al pastor for my meats. Both were amazing though I tend to favor the Al pastor the most. With a little bit of lime and intermittent bites of grilled jalapeños I ordered on the side, they make for an incredible combo!
I also ordered the Birria plate with consome, a sizable plate I was able to comfortably split with my wife. The meat had great flavor and after wrapping it in a tortilla, I dunked it into the consome drowning each bite! It’s a delicious broth so good you could drink it. With the unfortunate closing of Chuyitos nearby, this is another great place in the area that provides delicious Birria. This plate also comes with cilantro, onion, and lime to garnish the tacos with and a side of rice and beans.
Go check out their new location if you haven’t already. They have a menu with plenty of options and provided me with the quality service you’d look for at any restaurant.
